何时检测？
当医生怀疑您出现的麻疹、皮肤炎、鼻炎（鼻塞）、红眼病、哮喘、或腹痛等症状是由过敏引起时，应当进行该检测。

检测什么？
免疫球蛋白E (IgE)是一种与过敏反应相关的蛋白，通常其血液含量极低，该种抗体作为机体免疫系统的一份子能够防御“入侵者”。当具有过敏体质的人初次接触某种过敏原（如食物、草和动物皮屑）时即被致敏，此时机体认为这些潜在的过敏原是异体物质，并产生特异性IgE抗体与肥大细胞（机体组织中某种特殊细胞）和血液中的嗜碱性粒细胞（一种白细胞）结合。肥大细胞在全身普遍存在，但在皮肤、呼吸系统以及消化道含量最高。再次接触过敏原后，结合的IgE抗体识别该过敏原使肥大细胞和嗜碱性粒细胞释放组胺及其它化学物质，进而首先在接触部位引起过敏反应。
过敏原特异性IgE抗体试验通过检测血液中的相应IgE抗体的含量，筛查某种特殊过敏原。每种过敏原都有一种针对性试验：蜜蜂VS大黄蜂、蛋白VS蛋黄、三裂叶豚草VS西部豚草。检测可以根据过敏原进行分类，如食物、本地野草、菌类。您及您的医生可以从过敏原名单中选择可能导致您过敏的物质进行检测。
过敏原特异性IgE抗体试验有多种检测方法，其中传统方法是放射免疫吸附试验（radioallergosorbent test ,RAST），但大多数实验室都采用新的免疫方法取代了RAST。尽管这是一个特定的方法学并不是实验室采用的方法，现在还有一些医生将RAST等同于IgE过敏反应试验。
